Alien ReefsU

su 30.03.2014 07.00 - 08.00 60 minViasat Nature

(Alien Reefs/2012) Coral reefs are some of the richest hotspots of biodiversity on the planet. The warm water reefs of the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea are well known, but reefs don?t only occur in warm waters. In some of the ocean?s coldest, darkest depths they are thriving. Formed by icebergs as they slide across the sea bed, these deep water reefs leave behind the perfect foundations for coral to build upon. Hidden from view, they criss-cross the planet from the deep water tropics to the freezing Arctic. Some have never been explored by humans, but now underwater cameramen have ventured down to the pitch blackness to find life thriving. Who would have thought that such brilliant colours and creatures could thrive in such dark, cold waters?.

Nature's BabiesU

su 30.03.2014 08.00 - 09.00 60 minViasat Nature

(Nature's Babies/2006) These fascinating specials celebrate some of the most intriguing, exciting and adorable animal babies. Growing up can be fun for these cuties but it also has its traumas. We see how at every stage of a baby animal?s development it learns to fend for itself. Just how well it copes with each encounter dictates its ultimate success.

Not unlike humans, a baby?s experiences, being traumatic, funny, tragic or a moving example of nurturing, determines their path to learn how to survive. The way our wild babies handle these experiences marks their passage into adulthood.

Every programme is self contained and features a variety of species, drawing on the cuddliest, fuzziest and most fascinating species from across the wildlife board: mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects.

An overpopulated place where life thrives with strange occupants. The soil where these creatures live keeps them alive. Its sea is rough and mysterious, and under its surface there is one of the richest biodiversities of the planet; an ocean full of life and amazing creatures. Cephalopods have settled their kingdom here. They are creatures with a developed intelligence and a notorious capacity for learning and camouflage. With the assistance of Roger T. Hanlon, the most prestigious scientific in the field of cephalopods, this documentary reveals unpublished behaviour of these animals; such as courting, mating and spawning. Sophisticated diving equipment which does not scare the animals have allowed us to show you the Underwater Creatures in a unique habitat.

As most underwater drama is hidden from plain sight, only the ground-breaking macrophotography in this film can reveal the awe and beauty of life in the Sea of Creepy Monsters.

Today, every modern metropolis must respond to a fundamental question: how can nature play a central role in their development, which is both ecological and sustainable, and which allows humans to live in harmony, like in an ecosystem? New York, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Paris are pioneers. Each city is a giant laboratory, experimenting and developing urban ecology, according to its own natural history. Through their investigations, scientists, artists, architects and naturalists will find themselves at the forefront of these major technological and architectural challenges.
