Oceans of Contrast

to 28.03.2013 07.00 - 07.55 55 minViasat Nature

(Oceans of Contrast/2011) The southern part of the African Continent is a dramatic landscape with two different currents, the cold Benguela on the west and south and the warm Agulhas on the east. These contrasting oceans create one of the most diverse marine environments on Earth. The cold and rich marine realm of the west creates a lush and abundant landscape in the oceans, but an unforgiving dry world on land. Seals, African penguin, Cape gannets and the Southern Right whales find refuge here to breed. On the east, warm current flows south from the Mozambique Channel. The sea is a semitropical paradise with coral reefs, tiger sharks, turtles and brightly coloured fish, and on land there are rivers and semitropical forests with mangroves. Unique underwater and aerial cinematography will creates a tribute to the marine heritage of southern Africa.

But typically, Nigel is there to get up close and personal. He takes a plunge to joust with playful sea lions, watches young orcas learn to hunt and even has the tables turned on him when he is followed by an entourage of inquisitive gentoo penguin chicks.

Wild Animal E.R.

to 28.03.2013 09.50 - 10.15 25 minViasat Nature

(Wild Animal E.R./2008) This documentary series gives an insight into what goes on behind the scenes at Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital. Based in the South-East of Britain, Tiggywinkles is the biggest of its kind in the world. It is also unique, in that it specialises in rehabilitating Britain's indigenous wildlife.
Although now there are around 10,000 animal casualties admitted each year, and a team of over 40 staff and volunteers on hand, Tiggywinkles has sprouted from humble beginnings. The wildlife hospital started life operating out of a small garden shed, but it now serves as the hub of wild-animal care in the UK. The hospital has a policy to never turn any ailing creature away. Its ultimate goal is to nurse all injured animals back to health before releasing them into the wild. "Every animal that comes through the doors of Tiggywinkles is dying," says co-founder Les Stocker, "and it's our mission to give these incredible creatures a second chance at life."
Filmed day and night over a series of weeks, Wild Animal ER follows dedicated vets and volunteers as they tend to the full spectrum of Britain's wildlife.

(Tiger man of Africa/2010) There are no tigers in Africa. But what if there were? In an area of South African wilderness known as Tiger Canyons, one man has been hand-rearing some of nature's most ferocious creatures. But, rather than raise the continent's native hunters, wildlife filmmaker and enthusiast John Varty has opted to give Asia's apex predator a helping hand. We follow John Varty on his seemingly impossible dream: to create a new population of wild tigers outside their natural habitat. Starting with two young, zoo-born tigers, Varty now has more than 15 tigers at his Tiger Canyons reserve, and has used ever-present cameras to document two years of their lives. Whether mating, birthing or hunting, Varty shows these magnificent tigers with remarkable, up close and personal detail.

(The Lion Ranger/2010) Of all the big cats, the lion is one of the most terrifying ? but there?s one man who isn?t scared at all. He?s Kevin Richardson, and he?s dedicated his career to understanding, conserving and living alongside these majestic beasts. Kevin is a self-taught animal behaviorist with an uncanny ability to work with the planet's most iconic predators, shown here in a fascinating new light. The Kingdom of the White Lion?a reserve that is home to several large lion prides?is under threat, and Kevin is working tirelessly to save it, fighting a rapidly spreading bush fire and challenges threatening violence between teenage lions among many things. It's a race against time to protect this predator preserve.

Equator

to 28.03.2013 19.00 - 20.00 60 minViasat Nature

(Equator/2006) The Equator, a.k.a latitude zero, is the line that splits the world. But it?s far more than just a line on a map that divides the hemispheres; the Equator is a line of life and a powerful force of nature.

The Equator is a species factory. Equatorial animals live constantly in warm, humid surroundings. Life is good; they can breed all year round. The downside of living in a tropical ?paradise? is that you must share it with more than half of all the species on earth? that means many more creatures to eat you and compete with you. At the Equator animals and plants grow faster, bigger and more bizarrely than anywhere else. Equator explores how and why this happens.

The Equator is also our birthplace. Just as we evolved under the glare of the Equatorial sun on the East African savannah, so it is no accident that many ?hot spots? of biological significance occur on the Equator, each with it?s own host of remarkable animals ? among them the mighty Amazon, the high Andes, the rainforests of Borneo and the Galapagos Islands where major chapters of the story of evolution were written.

The Equatorial sun is the most powerful source of energy on earth. As it beats down on the ocean, it sends vast columns of moist air rising skywards like a bonfire. Rising air on such a scale generates the trade winds and great ocean currents that energise life on distant parts of the globe.

Equator is an epic HDTV production. It?s a 25,000-mile odyssey chasing the sun across this unique and powerful ?hot zone? that is a force of nature.

Nigel Marven?s Rhino Adventure

(Nigel Marven?s Rhino Adventure/2006) Rhinos: just how tough are they? It?s unlikely to be a question that has kept you awake at night, but nonetheless one that naturalist Nigel Marven sets out to answer in this odd mix of conservation documentary and revved-up macho travelogue. Marven scours the globe for rhinos and assesses what the future holds for them.

Whitechapel

to 28.03.2013 21.00 - 22.00 60 minViasat Nature

(Whitechapel/2008) The streets of Whitechapel are awash with blood. A murderer stalks the night, picking off vulnerable women and leaving them brutally butchered. The locals live in fear and the police remain clueless - with no motive, no evidence and no hope of catching this barbaric killer. But this is not the 19th Century and the time of Jack the Ripper. This is now. Assigned to the case is fast-tracked DI Chandler - a novice in the business of murder, an expert in the politics of policing and three day courses. His fellow officers, however, are anything but. Chief among them is DS Miles, the archetypal cynical, seen-it-all detective. Tipped-off by 'Ripperologist' Edward Buchan, Chandler realises that this modern day killer is copying the infamous Whitechapel murders, down to the very last detail. Can Chandler do what his fellow officers failed to do over 100 years before, and catch the person responsible? Cinematic and stylish, with a distinctive gothic edge and gallows wit, Whitechapel is a far cry from most police procedural dramas. Prepare for ambitious storylines, memorable, realistic characters and enough scares to keep the blood racing.
