That means, playing their part in the European breeding programmes for endangered species. It also means the zoo can focus more on education and conservation, especially of the native wildlife of West Wales. Their first step is to convert the American bison paddock into an African plains exhibit for endangered species, like the highly endangered Scimitar horned oryx. This means having to move two of the most dangerous animals in the zoo world, which is no mean feat.

I Bought My Own Rainforest

ma 06.10.2014 19.00 - 20.00 60 minViasat Nature

Wildlife photographer Charlie Hamilton James has just bought 100 acres of the Peruvian Amazon, without even looking at it first. He plans to spend a year photographing the animals on his land, before launching a campaign to protect more of the forest. But it turns out buying a piece of land over the phone isn't such a great idea. Instead of the green heaven he was imagining, he's bought a coca plantation, an illegal logging camp and a few fields of struggling crops. The reality of what he has taken on soon hits home. Over the series, Charlie discovers that the problems facing the Amazon are now all on his doorstep - the drug trade, illegal gold mining, logging and even poverty. In order to make the right decisions about his land he needs to understand these problems. He sets out to learn more by living and working with the local people and begins to realise that the way to help preserve the rainforest is not to buy it, but to engage with the people and work with them rather than against them. Incorporating Charlie's photographs of wildlife and people into the story, this is a jungle adventure that takes in everything from poisonous snakes and hallucinogenic shamanic brews to flesh eating diseases. In the end, his quest comes down to one very simple choice; the question is, has Charlie learnt enough about the Amazon to make the right decision?.

Many whale and dolphin species congregate in the waters of the Canary Islands. Short-finned pilot whales are found here in vast numbers ? the magnificent masters of deep sea diving. One large group is led by Isora, the matriarch, whose activities are documented for a year. Whilst the females and their offspring form the hard-core unit of this close-knit society, the males ensure the protection of newborns and juveniles ? a long-term investment which is crucial for pod survival. As the mothers give birth we examine the close bonds between the new arrivals and the pod, and how the whales deal with the tragic death of one of the calves. It?s not just a struggle for the young, but the rest of the whales must also deal with the dangerous effect of plastic waste, not to mention their daily battles with large squid who share the same food taste.

(The Fixer/2009) In the shadowy world between right and wrong, John Mercer is a modern-day gun for hire, beholden to his sinister master but not the boundaries - moral or otherwise - of the law. Released from prison unexpectedly early, Mercer is introduced to Kenny Jameson - a police officer 'retired on grounds of ill health'. Jameson makes it clear to Mercer that his freedom comes at a price - he must remove an untouchable criminal who has recently dispatched a senior police officer to an early grave. Mercer carries out the hit but finds that the promise of freedom was illusory. Blake had no intention of agreeing to his real liberty. Thrust together with the deviant Calum and the beautiful but amoral Rose, Mercer and his new 'friends' must bring their unique talents to bear on the fundamental mission - to disorganise crime, and bring order where the law has failed. From the makers of Spooks, Hustle and Life on Mars, this is an action-packed, high-octane series that asks whether operating outside the usual parameters of the law - under the pretext of protecting it - can ever be justified.
