Nature's Babies

to 21.08.2014 07.00 - 07.55 55 minViasat Nature

(Nature's Babies/2006) These fascinating specials celebrate some of the most intriguing, exciting and adorable animal babies. Growing up can be fun for these cuties but it also has its traumas. We see how at every stage of a baby animal?s development it learns to fend for itself. Just how well it copes with each encounter dictates its ultimate success.

Not unlike humans, a baby?s experiences, being traumatic, funny, tragic or a moving example of nurturing, determines their path to learn how to survive. The way our wild babies handle these experiences marks their passage into adulthood.

Every programme is self contained and features a variety of species, drawing on the cuddliest, fuzziest and most fascinating species from across the wildlife board: mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects.

Zoo Juniors

to 21.08.2014 07.55 - 08.25 30 minViasat Nature

(Zoo Juniors/2011) What sorts of challenges face the youngsters in a modern zoo? Lion cubs, piglets, little hatchlings and juvenile reindeer ? they couldn?t be more different, but they are all here together at Berlin Zoo and Berlin?s Animal Park. From regular weight checks to inoculations and first trips outside, this series offers an insight into all these firsts and many more as we observe the animals in Berlin in their first days of life through to being little toddlers. You?ll learn what the world?s shortest goat is, exactly when lion cubs get too dangerous to play with, and why baby elephants understand English and Indian, but no other languages.

Anna's Wild Life

to 21.08.2014 08.25 - 08.55 30 minViasat Nature

(Anna's Wild Life/2012) All in all it?s another action packed season, with all the mishaps, mayhem and magic that is the inevitable result of setting up home with wild animals. Having left the city far behind, Anna and her team have taken to zoo life lock, stock and barrel. Now that the zoo is on its feet, they are able to concentrate on the key roles for any modern zoo. That means, playing their part in the European breeding programmes for endangered species. It also means the zoo can focus more on education and conservation, especially of the native wildlife of West Wales. Their first step is to convert the American bison paddock into an African plains exhibit for endangered species, like the highly endangered Scimitar horned oryx. This means having to move two of the most dangerous animals in the zoo world, which is no mean feat.

Hope for Wildlife

to 21.08.2014 08.55 - 09.50 55 minViasat Nature

(Hope for Wildlife/2011) Now celebrating its third series, we follow Hope Swinimer's hands-on approach at the "Hope for Wildlife" society. Hope and her team get down and dirty, helping nurse sick, injured, abandoned and lost animals back to health and return them to their natural habitat. We follow the team as they rescue animals and decide how best to treat them. Tough choices must be made, but more often than not, the results are spectacular.

Cheetah Diaries

to 21.08.2014 09.50 - 10.20 30 minViasat Nature

(Cheetah Diaries/2012) Upheaval resonates through the Outreach Programme as the team are faced with moving the facility. It won?t be easy as the team must wait for the inspector to give the new site the go-ahead, not to mention getting their permits in time for the move. One certain cat ? Chobe ? is plagued by a mysterious illness that interrupts his chances of becoming a young ambassador. And as always, new life is an exciting possibility at the Outreach Programme ? and it seems that the bat-eared foxes are expecting a baby when they dig a new burrow system.

Boteti - The Returning River

to 21.08.2014 10.45 - 11.45 60 minViasat Nature

(Boteti - The Returning River/2010) For the past 20 years the Boteti River has been nothing but a dry, dusty riverbed. Now all that has changed and the river is flowing once again, bringing life-saving water to the animals that live in the region. Excellent rainfall in the Angolan highlands this year fed Botswana's Okavango Delta to overflowing, which allowed water to follow decades-old pathways to places like Leroo La Tau. Here the Boteti River is flowing once again, transporting this vital element to elephants, crocodiles and many other animals that have survived the arid and unforgiving landscape by walking long distances to drink from waterholes. Many of these animals have never seen flowing water before, and the elephants (Loxodonta africana) in particular are celebrating the arrival of the long-lost Boteti.

to 21.08.2014 13.35 - 14.20 45 minViasat Nature

(Panda?s Wild Move/2013) Kai Kai and Jia Jia are two of China?s most precious pandas. The species is dying out - unless they start breeding more. But pandas only have a two-day window of opportunity in the entire year to mate. Now Singapore thinks they can bring these bears back from the brink. To pull it off, they want to build an 8.5 million dollar luxury love shack on an unlikely tropical island, fly Jia Jia and Kai Kai 3,000 km away from their homes, and coax them into producing a new baby panda. But it?s not going to be easy: tight construction deadlines and coordinating a huge move are only the beginning. A team from the Singapore River Safari must head to China on a crash course in panda care ? their diets, behaviour and complex breeding procedures. But before they can do that, they have to learn to get along with them. And there?s an even bigger challenge waiting back home: pandas? mating seasons are triggered by a change in temperature ? and Singapore?s hot and humid climate is constant all year round. With the species? already notoriously low sex drive, the team will be tested to the limit.

Hope For Wildlife

to 21.08.2014 17.10 - 18.00 50 minViasat Nature

(Hope For Wildlife/2009) Mother Nature can be cruel enough - and when man and nature collide, wildlife is usually the loser. This series follows the amazing work of Hope For Wildlife Society, which looks after injured and orphaned wildlife in the Canadian wilderness - rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing thousands of animals each year. The founder of the Society, Hope Swinimer, her staff and volunteers want to right what?s gone wrong in the wild. They?re overworked, under-funded and up to their eyeballs in baby raccoons injured raptors and orphaned deer. As winter thaws, orphaned baby animals begin trickling into the rehab. By spring, it?s filled to capacity. And the rehab is fighting for survival, too. Hope scrambles to raise money as government support dwindles. In the face of it all, Hope is driven by her compassion and belief that every animal matters. An injured pigeon receives the same care as a wounded bald eagle. Not every animal can be saved. Tough choices must be made. There isn?t always a happy ending, but there is always Hope.

(Jimmy Doherty in Darwin's Garden/2009) In 1836, Charles Darwin returned from his five year expedition aboard The Beagle with some revolutionary ideas about the diversity of the world?s flora and fauna. However, before he could begin work on one of the most influential scientific publications of all time ?On the Origin of Species?, Darwin needed to expand his early hunches into a fully formed theory of evolution through a series of ingenious and astonishing experiments. Jimmy Doherty, farmer and entomologist, follows Darwin?s intellectual journey, recreating ground breaking experiments on in-breeding in plants, natural selection, and some quirky tests involving earthworms and music. Filmed in the gardens and greenhouses of Darwin?s home, this series rediscovers the science underpinning evolution.
