In February 2011, Matthew VanDyke is at home in Baltimore watching news coverage of the Libyan Arab Spring. Libya is a country he knows well, he has friends there and the footage disturbs him. So on the spur of the moment he decides to return and help the rebels fight against Qaddafi and his forces. He flies to Cairo, makes it across the Libyan border, and immediately gets to work collecting ammunition and weapons. But on a reconnaissance trip to the frontline, VanDyke and his unit are ambushed by Qaddafi's men. He is captured and eventually sent to the notorious Maktab Al Nasser Prison in Tripoli, where he's held in solitary confinement for nearly six months, suffering malnutrition and hallucinations. So when the chance of escape presents itself, is it real or just another trick of his mind….?
