A Year in the WildU

su 21.09.2014 15.40 - 16.30 50 minViasat Nature

Traversing all landscapes around the world for one year, we see how the seasons affect different parts of the world at different times - and how various animals cope. During the rainy season in Africa, vegetation is in abundance for such animals as the Samango monkeys who feast upon fig trees. It?s a different story when the dry season begins, and waters recede, leaving life a daily struggle for many. Later still in the year, the Northern territory?s temperature drops bitterly below zero, but climate changes means the ice forms more slowly than ever before. Though the seasons become harsher, nature becomes no less extraordinary in its survival.

Boteti - The Returning River

su 21.09.2014 17.20 - 18.15 55 minViasat Nature

(Boteti - The Returning River/2010) For the past 20 years the Boteti River has been nothing but a dry, dusty riverbed. Now all that has changed and the river is flowing once again, bringing life-saving water to the animals that live in the region. Excellent rainfall in the Angolan highlands this year fed Botswana's Okavango Delta to overflowing, which allowed water to follow decades-old pathways to places like Leroo La Tau. Here the Boteti River is flowing once again, transporting this vital element to elephants, crocodiles and many other animals that have survived the arid and unforgiving landscape by walking long distances to drink from waterholes. Many of these animals have never seen flowing water before, and the elephants (Loxodonta africana) in particular are celebrating the arrival of the long-lost Boteti.
